This is a vintage advertising cabinet card photo from circa 1890 that is about 6.5 X 4.25 inches in size. It shows the \"Race Clothing Manufacturing Co.\" store that was located in Decatur, Illinois; on Water Street, I believe. It appears members of the Race family are standing in front of the door to the business; while one appears to be John R. Race on the left because of his size(is described as a large man); but I can\'t say for certain who the men are. You can see his clothing displayed in the large windows. Mr. J.R. Race started the store around 1857. According to some accounts; depending on which one you read and think is accurate; Ulysses S. Grant(who would later become a military General and President) either had his first military uniform made there; or was refused service because his size was not available. The store was very successful and changed names a few times; becoming the name on this photo around 1889. The business was crippled by a fire around 1904; but repaired; then burned for good in a well-known business fire in August of 1909.
