Description...For sale we have here an amazing and seldom found 19c Japanese miniature table screen or plaque worked from soapstone or a similar stone in high relief being carved to both sides depicting two popular Japanese fables and stands on four carved and shaped feet. This fine stone carving was produced in Japan during the 2nd half of the 19c in the Meiji period in which I have not seen any other objects like this produced in Japan and there is a small oval label on the inside of one foot but the inked writing is no longer legible. The miniature screen or plaque is carved from a celadon color of soapstone with a lighter area running up from the bottom through both figures to each side to about half way up which is the light area you will see in the photos. The workmanship and the carved details are simply first rate with one side depicting \'Senin and the Toad\' and the other I cannot remember the title but it is like awizardblowing a cloud upwards with a small oni running in the cloud with each background finely done in a wonderful partial circle patterns and each side displaying pine trees, clouds, rockery and plants supported by flour carved and shaped feet with decorative graduating holes across the bottom frame and to the sides of the feet. Simply a lovely piece and rarely found.
Condition....Excellent with no noticeable chips, cracks, losses or repairs other than the feet appear to have been reglued at one time and the plaque could use a light clean otherwise a fabulous antique Japanese object.
