MOTHER OF GOD OF WEEPING AT THE CROSS

  • Medium:Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on a wood panel.
  • Size: 12 1/2 incheshigh x 10 1/2 inches wide [32 cm x 26.5 cm]; thickness of the panel 1 1/4 inch [3 cm]
  • Condition: Good and stable state of preservation. Two insert splints on the back. See photographs.
  • Iconography: This is a symbolic image of the evening of Good Friday. The composition of the icon is filled with a sense ofsorrowfulcalm before the future resurrection.Apparently, the appearance of this icon refers to the first half of the XVIII century and has a direct correlation with the apocryphal religious poems \"Weeping Virgin\" and \"Son of God\".
