THE MOTHER OF GOD \"JOY OF ALL WHO SORROW\"

  • Description: The Mother of God is depicted in full-lengthholding the Divine Child in the mandorla (the glorious areole).Their heads are crowned. They are surrounded by the people afflicted with infirmities and sorrows and the angels performing benefactions on behalf of the Mother of God. Over Her in the cloud (a segment of heaven) is the Lord of Sabaoth, in the upper left-hand and right-hand corners are the Sun and Moon.
  • Material:Wood panel. Upper and lower -end inserted splints. Levkas (gesso).Egg tempera. Gold 12 inches [36 cm x 31 cm]; thickness of the panel 1 1/4 inch[3 cm]

The iconography is specifically Russian, without Byzantine precedent.It is a type oficonthat depicts theTheotokosin a specific manner, standing beneaththe Lord of Sabaoth, who is in Heaven, and surrounded by people andangels.In addition, specific hymns are dedicated to celebrating her role of bringing hope and salvation into the world, thus becoming joy for all who sorrow.
The image of The Mother of God \" Joy of All Who Sorrow\" is based on the payer to theThe Mother of God:\"To Thee, the champion leader, do we Thy servants dedicate a hymn of victory and Thanksgiving, as ones who have been delivered from eternal death by the Grace of Christ our God Who was born of Thee and by Thy maternal mediation before Him. As Thou dost have invincible might, free us from all misfortunes and sorrowful circumstances who cry aloud:Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, full of Grace, Joy of all who sorrow!\"The Mother of God\" Joy of All Why Sorrow\" is a Theotokos image without a single composition pattern which is encountered in many versions. The origin of the icon is not known. According to the legend, the image, which, in addition to the Virgin, depicted people suffering from ailments and their healing angels, was first revealed in the Moscow Transfiguration of the SaviorChurchon Ordynka Street in Moscow.Russian chronicles tell that in 1683 the royal artist I.A. Bezmin painted an icon composition.The icon became widespread after an icon miraculously healed in 1688 a sister of the Patriarch Joachim Euphimia Petrovna Papina from a wound in her side. Right after the veneration, the liturgy and the tale were written for the icon.
This iconographic version was very widespread in Russian art in the 18th -19th centuries. Many of these icons became famous for their miraculous healings.
