For sale from my 25-year collection of antique Mah-Jong Sets:
Antique Mah Jong Set, Pyralin and Bamboo, \"Pung Chow\", Original Box, 1920s
The tiles are a slim layer of ivory-colored pyralin (cellulite) on a bamboo base, with the mah-jong character painted on each tile. The discoloration on the pyralin is natural (see photo #2).The original box is dove-tailed solid wood, it comprises 2 wood compartments, There is one smaller compartment is for the scoring sticks, dice and wind markers (\"mingg\") and one larger compartment for the tiles. The box is black, with a sliding wooden lid, ornately hand-painted with paterns and the words \"Pung Chow\", with very minimal paint loss (see photo #5).There is the customary age-realted cracking in the wood (see photos #8 and #9)
Pung Chow refers to the Pung Chow Company of New York City, a manufacturer of Mah Jong sets, incorporated in August 1923.
The standard true original Chinese set has 144 tiles (this is not an American, Japanese or Singaporean set which typically has 152 or 156 tiles, so there are no Animals, no Jokers, no red \"5\"s).
The set comprises:

• 36 character tiles
• 36 bamboo tiles
• 36 circle tiles
• 16 winds (4 east, 4 west, 4 south, 4 north)
• 12 dragons (4 red, 4 green, 4 white)
• 4 seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter)*
• 4 flowers (plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum)*

*: the 8 seasons and flowers are represented as buildings and modes of transport (see photo #3)
Each tile measures : 1.25\" x 0.75\" x 0.375\" (approx)
Also contains:

• Original cellulite sticks, with pips / dots for scoring (see photo #4)
• Markers for the wind (see photo #7)
• Dice

In addition, there is a 32 page book of rules from Pung Chow Company (see photo #6), in good condition for the age.
The box is in overall excellent condition, although there is some evidence of wear
