Fresh from an estate on consignment, here is an opportunity to own something special! and starting offer does not reflect value. Can end sale early if sold in person, so offer early and offer accordingly.
Period estimated to be mid 1800\'s, no makers mark, unsigned, incredible show piece in fantastic condition given the age and use of the item. Believed to be a early 1800\'s ivory handle which is only 5% of the entire cane.
A very nice scrimshaw hook cane made of tapering shark or ray vertebrae with 1` long horn ferrule and end cap. This is a particularly well made example of this type of scrimshaw cane with all the holes in the individual bone segments lining up to form a design down the length of shaft. This is a L-handle shark vertebrae walking stick with ivory tusk or cow horn or antler and the length is 33\" 1/2 inches.
It is in very good shape for this type of cane. There is no missing or broken vertebra and they are all tight. Small dent at bottom of cane. See photos for true description. Excellent condition. Appears to be all-original and dates from the late 1800\'s. Could be an ivory handle but we do not know.
It has been said that it was common for Sailors to build this style of cane for trade.
