This is a beautiful antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate anchor brooch.
The fouled anchor is a classic Victorian love symbol with the anchor meaning steadfastness and the fouling wire meaning entwined forever.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stones are lovely orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire and green bloodstones from the Isle of Rum on the west coast.The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The length is 4.5 cm and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
