According to ancient Greek drama, a komast, is one who performs akomosor a procession in honor of the Greek God of wine Dionysos. Komasts appeared on Greek vases from about 630 BC, The importance of these komasts lies in what they can tell us about the origins of Greek drama. The first existing drama sources came from about 480 BC, and for the previous 160 years, we are largely dependent on Greek vase paintings such as our present example.

The komasts type on our vase is called padded dancers, i.e., dancers with padded bellies and posteriors. This type of komasts have attracted particular attention, since this costume have been worn in later comedy.

The subject of our vase is quite rare and worthy of further study.
