Unique Large Wood Carved Tribal Easter Island (Rapa Nui) Moai Sculpture with wonderful wood grain on the face. This sculpture is made of an extremely heavy wood (could possibly be very old and made of “Toromiro” wood from the Toromiro bush that grew all over Easter Island) and weighs 4 pounds. It is 17.5 inches tall and the base 3” inches deep by 3.5” wide. There are no identifying marks and I don’t know the provenance of this sculpture but suspect it may have been carved in Polynesia. It is indeed a very nice sculpture.

“The Moai are monolithic statues, their minimalist style related to firms found throughout Polynesia. Moai are carved in relatively flat planes, the faces bearing proud but enigmatic expressions. The over-large heads are a sculptural trait that demonstrates the Polynesian belief in the sanctity of the chiefly head. They have heavy brows and elongated noses with a distinctive fish-hook-shaped curl of the nostrils. The lips protrude in a thin pout.”
