This is the 5th Assyut Egyptian silver shawl I have up for sale this year - it is, like the others, from my personal collection of the past fifty years.
It is ivory white cotton fishnet with silver plated metal pieces hand woven (or, embroidered) into the netting. Hand Made in the 1920s in Assyut, Egypt - mostly for the tourist trade that went wild for anything Egyptian after the discovery, in that decade, of Tut Ankhamen\'s tomb.
This long shawl is clean, with no stains and no holes. Some of the metal pieces are tarnished but that is typical for these shawls. A gentle soaking in baking soda sometimes removes the tarnish as it does on your silverware.
The design is completely geometrical - lozenges, diamonds small and large
The netting (or, tulle) is very strong , supple and definitely not dried out.
The artistry of these pieces makes them very appropriate in home decor as much as in fashion design.
The silver pieces are hand woven and hand folded individually between the netting or \" cotton tulle\" and no two shawls are ever alike as far as I know.
I owned an antiques shop in Greenwich Village in the 60s and 70s (Old Horizons Antiques at 195 Bleecker St off McDougal) and handled a lot of these amazing fabrics. Every one of them is unique in some way.
They can be dyed into any color and fashioned into almost any garment due to the flexibility of the metal pieces in the netting. No matter how the assiut ( assuit ) fabric is worn it is always glamorous and moves like no other piece of fabric due to its weight from the silver plated pieces. They are stunning on walls, pianos and tables and chairs of every kind. (For more information on assiut clothing design, ethnic dance costumes, history, care, etc you can refer to the only book I have ever heard of on this highly collectible fabric - The Cloth of Egypt by Dawn Devine )
