Joseph Konzal,(1905-1994), anAmerican sculptor, came from Milwaukee to New York in 1926, where he studied atthe Art Students League, painting with Max Weber, sculpture with RobertLaurent, 1926-30, the Layton School of Art 1927 and the Beaux-Arts Institute in Design 1928-30. His first one-man exhibition was at the Eighth StreetPlayhouse, New York, 1938. He worked as a frame-maker; on WPAsculptureprojects; in shipyards during World War II; and in the display industry. In theearly 1950s he made rhythmical semi-abstractfigures in metalandwood, then began about 1956 to make welded metal sculptures of a more abstract kind.InNew York, he had shows at the Bertha Schaefer and Andre Zarre galleries. Hiswork is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, theSmithsonian Institution in Washington and the Tate Gallery in London. Mr.Konzal, who was born in Milwaukee, also taught sculpture at a number of schoolsand cultural institutions, among them the Brooklyn Museum Art School, QueensCollege, Adelphi University and Kent State University.

Mr. Spring recalls him being a member of the New York School and quite a partof the NY art scene. Their relationship was brief as the artist moved fromcasting in bronze to welding in metal for his abstract sculptures.
