INTRODUCTION

“Fraught” is a special LIMITED EDITION, which was produced on the occasion of Roger Ballan’s first solo exhibition of the same name at the Reflex New Art Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 2003. The Edition includes a mint true First Edition copy of the book “Shadow Chamber” and a signed and numbered gelatin silver black & white print titled “Fraught, 2003” and a specially produced limited-edition DVD. The LIMITED EDITION contains only 30 copies, of which this is number 27.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Roger Ballen is exploring reality in a somewhat penetrating and merciless manner. Whereas many artists are inclined to beautify reality, he seems fascinated by the very opposite. A variety of disciplines and styles converge in his photography, producing a visual language entirely unique to Ballen. He shows us pictures we recognize instantly but would prefer not to see. It is photography easily understood at first glance. It takes as its point of departure the most classic of themes from the visual arts. We recognize the classic portrait, the landscape and the still life, now in the purest of forms, now part of a composite. Ballen composes his images and appeals to the familiar world of the flat surface. This world is a very much tried-and-tested domain of age-old conventions, expectations and clichés. In part, Ballen follows these conventions, but has no trouble dropping them when it suits. In this way he consciously toys with the limits of realism and in particular with its adjoining worlds – surrealism and magic realism. He also exceeds the boundaries of realism and creates his own, imaginary reality.

ABOUT THE BOOK

SUMMARY

Fraught is a Deluxe Limited Edition of the photography of Roger Ballen, which contains an As New/As New First Edition, First Printing copy of “Shadow Chamber”, a black and white gelatin silver print titled “Fraught”, and a specially produced DVD, all housed in a specially produced cloth covered clamshell box. The clamshell box measures 14 x 13 inches (35.6 x 33 cm) and is blind stamped with the artist’s name plus Reflex New Art gallery on the cover, with the title “Fraught” stamped in silver. Inside the clamshell there is a hardcover cloth covered book with pictorial duct jacket titled Shadow Chamber. This First Edition copy (2005) measures 12 x 11 ¼ inches (30.5 x 28.6 cm), and contains 128 pages, with 61 black and white images.

Laid inside the clamshell on top of the book is a black folder with “Fraught” printed on the cover. Inside there is a black & white silver gelatin print, which measures 10 x 10 inches (25.4 x 25.4 cm) with the image being 8 ½ x 8 ½ inches (21.6 x 21.6 cm). The print is titled and noted Reflex Gallery Exhibition Edition 27/30, September 2005, “Fraught, 2003”, and is signed by the artist in black marker, all on verso. The black paper folder containing the print has a shadow of a bend on the LHS cover, which must have occurred during assembly at the Gallery. There is absolutely no damage or blemish to the print, which resides safely inside the paper cover in a paper/plastic open folder.

The DVD contains a documentary of the photographer called “Selfportrait.” By Saskia Vredeveld, from Piecefield Film. This is a special limited edition Copyrighted version of the film “Selfportrait” in an edition of 50 produced on the occasion of the first solo show of Roger Ballen at Reflex New Art Gallery in Amsterdam, NL.

This extremely rare copy of Fraught by Roger Ballen is offered in AS NEW/Mint condition. It was purchased directly from Reflex New Art Gallery in Amsterdam, NL in 2005, and has ben carefully stored in a clean air, temperature and humidity-controlled Environment for the period to date.
