TheGary and Paulinis Vacit \"Knifewing\"Bolo Tie

This wonderfulBolo Tiewas made by the famous Zuni artist Gary Vacitand his wife Paulinis. They started producing jewelry in the 1960\'s andare perhaps most famous forcreating Knifewing design Zuni jewelry. Gary is the son of Frank Vacit (1915-1999). He must have taught his son to make Knifewing jewelry at an early age. The Vacit family has work that is featured inmany high end galleries and collections. It can also befound inthe major Native Jewelry catalogs and reference books. A few are listed below.

Knifewing Mythology

In 2010 Toshio Sei wrote an excellent book about Knifewing designs in Zuni jewelry. The reference is below (see **). He describes thatKnifewing mythological beings are not Kachinas in a strict sense and that they were first used in Zuni jewelry for sale in about 1928. The are depicted as having flint blades on their wings and can sweep down from the clouds to carry off beautiful Zuni maidens. They have a strong presence!

Description

This is Bolo isetch signed with their correct marking\"G & P Vacit. I own a number of their buckles in my personal collection and they are usually stamped with their hallmark.Because of the the size of the bolo pendant and the fact that they had to work around the clasp, it is etch signed. There are two very similar G & P Vacit Knifewingjewelry pieces pictured in the new 2010 Toshi Sei book (please see the ** reference below). It is guaranteed to be Sterling Silver and authentic. The fancy tips are also Sterling Silver.I have found no defects like cracked or loose stones, noticeable scratches, etc in the pendant. The Tips are in Fair condition. It has the warm tarnishpatina of severalyears of kind ownership. The braided leather cord is in very good conditionand shows no evidence of wear. The Clasp is fine. I believe you will be pleased!

In 1977 Gary and Paulinis Vacit were featured in a book on Zuni Jewelry with twofull color pages(please see *** below - and in the attached pictures). In addition toalready being firmly established in the history of Zunijewelry during their early lifetimes, Gary and Paulinis have just recently recieved new recognition and academic interest. Inthe book about the Knifewing in Zuni Jewelry (see ** below), Toshi Sei devotesa full page to Gary and Paulinis and has two full color photographs ofTheir Knifewingjewelry to compliment the text. Gary\'s fatherFrank Vacit also has three pages devoted to his Knifewings in the same new reference book. This is an opportunity to own ahigh quality piece of Zuni jewelry.
