Coffee table designed by Gordon & Jane Martz for Marshall Studios, polychrome inset tile top with walnut outer rim and legs. The tile top is in Excellent Condition with mild wear consistent with age and use to the walnut legs. (See Pics). Ca. 1960s. The legs are removable for easy shipping. Gordon Martz and Jane Marshall (1929-2007)met while they were students at theNew YorkState College of Ceramics at Alfred NY. In 1951, theyjoined the Marshall Studios in Veedersburg, Indiana,founded by Jane\'s grandmother Jesse in 1922, and operated by the familyincluding Jane\'s father Nicholas Marshall and her mother Grace,originally to producelampshades and woodwork.For the next 38 years, the Martzes at Marshall Studios designed andproduced a wide variety of functional ceramic housewaresincluding stoneware lamps, dishes, and tiles. The bodies of their ware wereformed by slip-casting, ram pressing, or jiggering, and the pieces werehand decorated. Their work was recognized by a design award from the Museumof Modern Art in New York City, which also has some of their work in itspermanent collection.
