Great Horned Owl:

This great owl is our only large owl with ear-tufts. Its huge wings stretch out to a span of about four and one-half feet, which makes it a very impressive bird in the air. It hunts chiefly by night, but frequently it is seen in the morning or evening twilight (which the English peasantry picturesquely call \"owl-light\") or even on dark and cloudy days. It is one of the very first, perhaps the first of our birds to nest in the spring. The deep, resonant booming tones of this owl are among the lowest notes to be heard in our forests. The notes are all about on the same pitch. The commonest form of the song is HOO, HOOHOO, HOO, HOO. There are several variations on this call as well. Deep damp forests and dense impenetrable wooded swamps are the favorite haunts of this great bird of prey. Other names are Hoot Owl, Great Hoot Owl, Virginia Owl, Horned Owl.

Clark Bronson studied art at Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis and at the University of Utah. He has won wide acclaim as an animal illustrator for sports and wildlife magazines, for wildlife calendars, for decorating greeting cards, and also as an illustrator of several books. A painting of his received one of the top six awards at the Lithographic Awards Competition in 1962. Today he is considered one of the foremost wildlife artists in the United States. (This info on the artist is from the portfolio mentioned above).

Just when Clark\'s career as a wildlife painter was nearing full scale, he suddenly decided to switch mediums. Putting away his brushes, Bronson began sculpting. With his background in painting and firsthand knowledge of nature, the transition was made quickly and easily. With the completion of his first sculpture, it became evident that the precision and realism for which his paintings were so well known, was to take on even greater form and freedom in his work as a
