HISTORICAL QUOTE:\"In war there is no second prize for the runner-up.\"General Omar N. Bradley

HISTORICAL NOTE:The OpelMaultier(\"MULE\") was originally developed to handle the terrible road conditions on the Eastern Front… The Germans realized that half-track style vehicles operated far better than normal all-wheeled transport trucks and lorries.

The Maultier came into existence in 1941, following the commencement of the Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Due to the rasputitsa conditions of the Eastern front, which reduced the ground to boggy morasses of mud, made the use of conventional supply trucks near to impossible. This led to the Wehrmacht calling for additional half-track vehicles, as they were the only type, along with other fully tracked vehicles, that could traverse the Russian terrain. Production of existing half-tracks ultimately proved unable to meet the demand, and therefor, certain truck manufacturing companies such as Adam Opel, Mercedes-Benz and Daimler-Benz, and Ford Germany, began to convert their existing truck designs into half-tracks, although the Maultier design was unable to compare with full mobility of a purpose-built half-track. The Maultier, officially designated by the Wehrmacht the \"SdKfz3\", entered production in 1941 and 1942. Most conversions were made from Opel trucks, mainly the Opel Blitz T3.6S. The Maultier design remained in service until the end of the war.

Though we have never visited any of the battle sites in the Soviet Union, we have visited ALL FIVE of the Landing Beaches in Normandy on several occasions, as well as the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez \'44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found the Belgian people, especially in the town of Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life to the Belgian civilians and in damaged buildings. In addition, should you ever want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne,we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which mayhelp to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
