La Valse, de Maurice Ravel pour l\'Opera-Comique, 1970Bernard Buffet, a French painter whose barren landscapes, harsh still lifes, gaunt religious scenes and sad circus clowns brought him early fame and fortune but little enduring critical esteem, died yesterday at his home in the Var region of southern France. He was 71.

He was a suicide, said law enforcement officials, who gave no further information. Mr. Buffet suffered from Parkinson\'s disease and could no longer work, said Maurice Garnier, a Parisian art dealer who had worked with the artist for 51 years.

Mr. Buffet was born in Paris, started drawing around age 10 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Highly precocious, he had his first solo show in Paris in 1947 and in 1948, at age 20, was awarded the Prix de la Critique jointly with an older painter, Bernard Lorjou.

By then he had developed a distinctive style of elongated, spiky forms, somber colors, flattened spaces and an overall mood of loneliness and despair. In signature black outlines that suggested illustrational versions of Giacometti\'s tenuous scaffolds, Mr. Buffet reduced reality to the point of abstraction. His early works included paintings titled \'\'The Horrors of War,\'\' \'\'Hanging From the Gallows,\'\' \'\'The Angel of Destruction\'\' and others showing death camp victims.

His work seemed to reflect the existential alienation and spiritual solitude of postwar Paris, while his youth and slim good looks positioned him on the crest of the future. Along with Yves Saint Laurent, Brigitte Bardot, Roger Vadim and Francoise Sagan, he was included in a 1958 article in The New York Times Magazine titled \'\'France\'s Fabulous Young Five.\'\' A lengthy profile appeared in The New Yorker in 1959. By then Mr. Buffet was exhibiting his work regularly in New York, first at the Kleeman Galleries in 1950, then at Knoedler, John Heller, Niveau and Hutton-Chambard.

By the early 1950\'s Mr. Buffet had gone from being a classic starving artist to one who lived like Picasso. He had two Rolls-Royces, a manservant and a 300-year-old chateau in Provence. Tremendously productive, he was said to have equaled Renoir\'s output in paintings by age 26. Later, as he found himself overwhelmed with commissions, his work became more stylized and decorative, losing its original impact.

Mr. Buffet, who is survived by his wife, Annabel, also worked in engraving, lithography and occasionally sculpture and designed sets for ballets for the Paris Opera.

His work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Musee d\'Art Moderne de la Ville Paris and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. There are also two museums in Japan devoted to his work.

Bernard Buffet (French: [byfɛ]; 10 July 1928 – 4 October 1999) was a French painter of Expressionism and a member of the anti-abstract art group \"L\'homme Témoin\" (the Witness-Man).[1]

Among his classmates were Maurice Boitel and Louis Vuillermoz.
Sustained by the picture-dealer Maurice Garnier, Buffet produced religious pieces, landscapes, portraits and still-lifes. In 1946, he had his first painting shown, a self-portrait, at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans at the Galerie Beaux-Arts. He had at least one major exhibition every year. Buffet illustrated \"Les Chants de Maldoror\" written by Comte de Lautréamont in 1952. In 1955, he was awarded the first prize by the magazine Connaissance des arts, which named the 10 best post-war artists. In 1958, at the age of 30, the first retrospective of his work was held at the Galerie Charpentier.
Pierre Bergé was Buffet\'s live-in lover until Bergé[2] left Buffet for Yves Saint Laurent.
On 12 December 1958, Buffet married the writer and actress Annabel Schwob. His daughter Virginie was born in 1962, and later, daughter Danielle in 1963. His son Nicolas, was born in 1973, the same year that he was named \"Chevalier de la Légion d\'honneur\".
On 23 November 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum was founded by Kiichiro Okano, in Surugadaira, Japan.
At the request of the French postal administration in 1978, he designed a stamp depicting the Institut et le Pont des Arts – on this occasion the Post Museum arranged a retrospective of his works.[3]
Buffet created more than 8,000 paintings and many prints as well.
Buffet committed suicide[4] at his home in Tourtour, southern France, on 4 October 1999. He was suffering from Parkinson\'s disease and was no longer able to work. Police said that Buffet died around 4 p.m after putting his head in a plastic bag attached around his neck with tape.
