Naturaltoothbrush (or miswak) vs plastic toothbrush:

  • The Miswak is a natural toothbrush.Studies conducted on the Miswak prove that it is better than toothbrush or toothpaste for preventing gum disease. This article offers useful information regarding use of natural tooth brush verses regualar plastic toothbrush (and toothpaste).

  • Miswak is being known as chewing stick in the western world and is being looked upon as a form of alternative medicine. It is composed of a compact group of minute natural fibers that perform exactly the same function as a normal toothbrush except that it is made of natural rather than plastic fibers.

  • Miswak is composed of a compact group of minute natural fibers that perform exactly the same function as a normal toothbrush except that it is made of natural rather than plastic fibers. For this reason it may be gentler on the gums.

  • A clinical trial study on Ethiopian school children, comparing miswak with the conventional toothbrush, found Miswak to be as effective as the toothbrush in removing oral deposits.

  • By contrast with the conventional plastic toothbrush, the miswak can be used anytime, anywhere.

Miswakis basically a pencil-sized stick 10 to 15 cm long with a diameter of1 to 1.5 cm from Arak (Salvadora persica) or the Toothbrush tree. But, in areas where it is not available, sticks from other localshrubs/trees like orange (Citrus sinensis), lime (Citrusaurantifolia), and neem (Azadirachta indica) can also be used asteeth-cleaning aid.

Theuse of miswak for oral hygiene serves dual function, i.e., mechanicalplaque control by friction between plant fibers and tooth surface andchemical plaque control due to its chemical composition. Each ofthese components has some specific role in oral health and its uniquepharmacological and therapeutic properties can also be explained onthe basis of its composition.[6] Silica acts as abrasive materialthat removes stains and deposits from the tooth surface. Sodiumbicarbonate has mild abrasive and germicidal effect. Tannic acid hasastringent effect on mucus membrane and found to be good anti-plaqueand anti-gingivitis. Resins serve a physical function and form alayer over the enamel which protects it from microbial action.Alkaloids show bactericidal effect and stimulate the gingiva.Essential oils have anti-septic effect and stimulate the flow ofsaliva. Vitamin C helps in healing and repair. Calcium and fluorideions promote remineralisation of tooth structure and have mild antibacterial action.

TheWorld Health Organization recommends the use of the miswak ininternational consensus reports on oral hygiene published in 1986 andin 2000.

ScientificStudies on Miswak
The Wrigley Company conducted a studyon the Miswak which was published in the Journal of Agricultural andFood Chemistry in 2007 . Wrigley’s research concluded that mintslaced with Miswak extract were 20 times more effective in killingbacteria than ordinary mints. A small testimony to this fact is that, after half an hour, the mints laced with Miswak extract killed about60% of the bacteria where as the ordinary mints managed only 3.6%.

In the August 2008 issue of the Journal of Periodontology, thereappeared a study conducted by Swedish researchers on the Miswak, aswell. The study apparently found that suspended Miswak pieces in apetridish, the medium for culturing bacteria, were able to killbacteria that cause periodontal disease with out being in physicalcontact with the bacteria. The researchers, however, suggested thatthe Miswak pieces may have been sprayed with antibiotic gases, intheir attempt to explain the phenomenon.

Yet another study, one comparing the use of the toothbrush and theuse of the Miswak (2003) can be reviewed currently online at thewebsite for the U.S. National Library of Medicine and NationalInstitutes of Health (PubMed).

The study concluded that Miswak was more effective thantoothbrushing in reducing plaque and gingivitis provided it was usedcorrectly. Similar studies found on the same website and elsewherevouch for the effectiveness of Miswak over toothbrush. “The miswakappeared to be more effective than toothbrushing for removing plaquefrom the embrasures, thus enhancing interproximal health,” statedthe researchers.

There have been plenty of published studies on the Miswak and, infact, entire books published which study its oral and systemicbenefits.

With its strong antibacterial properties and perpendicularbristles, the Miswak is a natural toothbrush, toothpaste and flosscombined.

HowTo Use Miswak ?

1-Touse your miswak stick: Remove the stick from the package and trim orchew the bark off one end of the stick; about a 1/2 inch. Chew on theexposed end until the twig forms bristles. Brush as usual. Notoothpaste required. The miswak will freshen the mouth. Every fewdays (when bristles look like an old broom) cut off the exposedbristles, peel bark and start anew

2-Howto use miswak is the first question which comes in to the mind ofthose who are not familiar with it. Using miswak is no rocket scienceand anyone can use it easily. Before starting to do miswak one thingshould be kept in mind that the size of the miswak twig should not begreater than 6 to 8 inch. When you get a miswak and you are ready touse it first of all wash it nicely with your drinking water. Next, start chewing it from one end, keep chewing it till its fiber becomesseparated. Once the fibers are separated, one can start using it likea toothbrush. Take it into your mouth move up, down, left and right, just like a toothbrush is used. After finishing, wash your mouth withnormal water.

Enjoy!and keep smiling :)
