The earliest paintings on this subject arefound in the Roman catacombs and the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua.The apparition of this icon in Russiatook place in 1392.

The Mother of God is always depictedbareheaded that emphasises her virginal status. The feast is on 26 December (8January).

Thismodern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow)that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, specialpriming). The halos and the background were hand engraved. It was painted thenwith egg tempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. Thestyle is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

There are two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping.

Size= 11.8x9.4x0.7 (30x24x1.8 cm). Weight = 600 gr.
