The Eames® Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The request was for leisure chairs light enough to move from indoors to out and strong enough to withstand the elements. At the time, the Eameses were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined and made more affordable since WWII. They constructed a lightweight die-cast frame for the project, then wrapped it in a sling – a “sitting pocket” that subtly conforms to the body’s shape. The result was a completely new type of seat and a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell. While the original concept was for outdoor seating, the Eameses quickly recognized its possibilities for indoor use.This collection has been in continuous production by Herman Miller since 1958.Constructed of 61% recycled materials, it’s also 88% recyclable at the end of its useful life.This is an authentic Eames chair by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.The legs are the ORIGINAL4 BLADE STYLE
which was later changed to a4 ROUNDED LEGS style.
Those legs were later modernizedwith5 ROUNDED LEGSand that version is still produced today.
This particular example is in excellent 85% restored conditionA 100% restoration would include replacing the excellent \"naugahide\" synthetic leather and the still very good hard plastic glides.The seat sits low and is quite wide with a 21\" seat width.
It is durable enough to support well over 300 lbs yet it\'s minimalist approach takes up very little space.
It also is much more comfortable than it appears.
The synthetic leather is suspended and forms a slight cradle or hammock for your body.
It is comfortable to sit in for many hours at a stretch.
Embedded stamp is present with the Herman Miller name.
The upholstery is in very good condition with only minor scuffing wear to the four corner edgesand small holes on underside which can not be seen under normal viewing .

Original tough and easy to clean Naugahide Showing light signs of use as can be seen in the photos.

There is scuff wear to all 4 corners and a tiny vertical cut near the top front. SEE PHOTOS USING ZOOM TOOL.

Bases and Metal

The black arms are in excellent condition.

If you prefer the aluminum arms then just sand off the paint to expose the aluminum.

“SEE PHOTOS USING ZOOM TOOL. All 4 corners of upholstery have rub wear with touch up. I have personally done the restoration work on this chair. It has been dismantled, and hand polished. Arms have been re-coated satin black. (NOTE: arms are the same aluminum as frame underneath paint, so if you desire that finish you can sand the rubberized black paint) See Photos as they are part of description.”
