Up for your consideration is an original Ca.1950 Russell Spanner \"Ruspan\" Chair, completely restored wood frame and newly reupholstered in a fine & close black nylon webbing. Created in 1950 by Russell Spanner, the Lounge Chair with Arms has become a classic of Canadian Mid-Century Modern furniture design. Out of production for more than 50 years, Gus Modern Company has recently worked with the Spanner family to introduce reproductions of this iconic vintage Russell Spanner chair, that are crafted in Toronto like the originals. The \"Ruspan\" Lounge Chair with Arms, is a unique chair that features a woven-web seat, formed plywood backrest, and angular shape which epitomizes the energetic spirit of post-war North American industrial design. This Authentic Russell Spanner \"Ruspan\" chair is in Excellent Condition with only some slight paint loss to one of the lower back support bolt heads. (See Pics) Ca. 1950.
Russell Spanner
Russell Spanner (1916–1974) was a Canadian designer who contributed to residential furniture designs in the 1950s.
Spanner\'s designs included dining and lounge chairs, tables, and modular storage units. The designs were manufactured at Spanner Products Limited, the family-owned woodworking company in Toronto, Canada, founded originally by his grandfather.[1] His furniture lines were sold and distributed at department store chains and independent merchants.[2]
\"The Ruspan Originals line was boxy and geometric, but most of all it was simple, functional and modern, all qualities that appealed to young post-war couples buying furniture for their new houses or apartments.\"[3] Spanner\'s designs utilized innovative manufacturing techniques such as curved plywood and non-upholstered, woven-web seating. Many of the designs reused components and shared consistent proportions, which gave his work a characteristic aesthetic.
