An original and rare autograph of SENATOR IRA HARRIS [1802-1875] of New York. He had been elected in 1861 as United States Senator to replace William H. Seward, who was appointed Secretary of State by President Abraham Lincoln. He visited Lincoln in the White House often and grew a friendship with him. His daughter Clara Harris, who was a favorite of Mrs Lincoln, and her fiance Major Henry Rathbone, were the guests of the Lincolns in their booth at Ford\'s Theater on the night of the assassination. After shooting the President, the assassin John Wilkes Booth stabbed Rathbone in the arm when he tried to stop him from escaping, and Ms. Harris comforted the distraught Mrs Lincoln, who was hysterical with grief.
