THIS IS A STUNNING RARE EXAMPLE OF A GENUINE USED VINTAGE TAPA CLOTH FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA (NOT A MADE FOR TOURISM EXAMPLE) IT IS FROM POPONDETTA, ORO PROVINCE, PNG.

THE TAPA CLOTH WAS COLLECTED IN THE EARLY 1960\'S BY AN AUSTRALIAN ANTHROPOLOGIST AND WAS THEN PART OF A AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY MUSEUM COLLECTION UNTIL WE BOUGHT IT AT sale IN 2000.

THIS IS A PARTICULARLY STUNNING DESIGN AND IS DIFFERENT IN BOTH SHAPE (ie square as opposed to the generally long narrow shape of PNG tapa cloth) AND IN THE VARIETY OF DESIGN RATHER THAN THE STANDARDISED REPETITIVE DESIGN YOU NORMALLY FIND.

AS ANTHROPOLOGISTS WE UNDERSTAND THIS PARTICULAR TAPA CLOTH BY ITS SHAPE AND THE AREA IT WAS COLLECTED FROM WOULD HAVE BEEN USED AS A COVERING FOR WIDOWS TO BE WORN FOR A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME AFTER THEIR HUSBANDS DEATH, AS A COVER OVER THEIR BACKS.

Measurements; 78 X 89 CM or 31 X 34 Inches

Material; Beaten bark and natural ochres

Description; Please see photos

Condition; *** PLEASE READ Good condition for age, however item is in used condition so as is normal with its age and with tapa cloth in general there are some small holes plus a couple of small rips on the outer edges of the tapa cloth plus the item has a smoky patina and some dark maybe charcoal? patina along the edges (not very noticeable see photos but we mention just to be thorough) and of course all of this adds to the vintage and authenticity of the item, however if you are looking for a perfect example of a tourist tapa cloth this is not for you.

Postage Costs; We offer FREE Postage AUSTRALIA wide

International Postage is $ 40.00 to USA/Europe $ 22.00 NZ/Pacific Please contact us for prices to other places before! offerding.
