US CAVALRY McCLELLAN SADDLE HOODED STIRRUP EARLY SINGLE PLY LEATHER?:
$46.00

Some time ago, I acquired an old McClellan saddle, in very rough shape, from a neighbor. He said it had been in an old trunk in his barn since he acquired the property over 50 years ago. It is a unique McClellan, and difficult for me, who has somewhat limited knowledge, to exactly identify.
These hooded stirrups are from the saddle. They are McClellan wooden stirrups, and the leather hoods are cut the exact same size as the early single ply McClellans. The only difference, is the top of the hoods, where the stirrup leathers would enter, are cut away slightly, giving the front a measure of 9 inches whereas, without the cutdown, the hood would have measured 10 inches, standard for the McClellan.
The leather itself is quite good. The hoods are the single ply, used in the pre 1904 saddles. The wooden stirrups still feel quite strong, but are split at each of the bends. One stirrup has laid back down considerably since it was oiled. The other is still quite splintered at this point. The base of the stirrup is just over 4 inches.
There is no US Cartouche, possibly due to wear and the ravages of time, as I have had early hoods that no longer showed their cartouche. The sides are riveted quite solidly, but are attached with 2 rivets on each side.
Hooded stirrups are expensive, and getting harder to find in the single ply. These might complete your early saddle.
