Rare large crystalline glazed porcelain vase by Thomas Gotham, West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers. Thomas Gotham (1872 - 1941) has been associated with California Faience & California Pottery. Any work by Thomas Gotham is seldom seen on the open market. Large examples like this one are quite rare, this particular shape is especially rare.
The vase is in absolute mint condition. No chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs and is fully & unconditionally guaranteed as represented. Very fine crazing common with these vases and only noticeable upon very close inspection, does not detract from the beauty or value of the vase. As with most of his work, the clarity, depth and subtle variety of color in the crystalline glaze make this a very attractive and interesting vase. The majority of Gotham vases are unsigned though many have the dime sized raised circle on the center of the bottom as does this vase. There is also what appears to be an \"L\" above a \"7\" separated with a horizontal line, though somewhat illegible, handwritten in blue under the glaze, typical of Thomas Gotham notations. The vase & model number are shown in the period catalogue of his work. There is a reprint in the July/August 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Art Pottery Association which shows this form. I was unable to locate my copy, but ordered an additional back issue which will be included in this sale for your reference.
Likely produced when he was working at West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers in the mid-twenties. The value of his work has been escalating dramatically in recent years due to discovery, publications and Museum Exhibitions.
