The History

This beautiful pair of earrings were made by a very talented Navajo Nation Native American silversmith by the name of TK Emerson. It features hand crafted silversmith work throughout.

Hematite has a long history of use as a pigment. As a gemstone, this material is often carved but very rarely faceted. Despite its association with blood and the color red, hematite\'s color can range from black and metallic gray to brownish red in thin slivers or crystals.

For jewelry purposes, gem cutters often make cameos, intaglios, carvings, beads, or cabochons from hematite. Occasionally, gem enthusiasts may want opaque, sub-metallic gems faceted like marcasite, with flat bases and few facets.

The earrings are marked \"Sterling TK\" for TK Emerson of the Navajo Nation. The design is very representative of his work. One of the earrings is missing a dangle. In the pictures, it is the earring on the right. One of the posts is bent but the earring are still wearable.

The Piece

These classic Navajo earrings each feature a hand cabochon cut and polished Hematite stone. The stones are oval cut and bezel sit near the top of the earrings. Beneath the main motif there are 38 cylindrical Hematite beads that dangle on 6 graduated silver rods. One of the earrings is missing an outside dangle and only has 34 beads. The Hematite is black in color and glassy in hue. The stones are in great condition and display normal wear, with no scratches, cracks or chips.

The silver work in these earrings is completely hand crafted and features traditional TK Emerson silver work throughout. There is a half circle silver accent connecting the main Hematite stone to the dangling Hematite beads. This half circle silver accent features a riveted edge and hand stamped floral patterns bordering the main Hematite, followed by linear designs. There are silver bead accents, both three dimensional and flat, throughout the dangling portion of the earrings.

The earrings just over 2\" tall by 7/8\" wide. The Hematite cabochon measures 1/2\" tall by 3/8\" wide. The design includes posts for pierced ears as well as backings to keep the earrings secure.
