David Tsikewa is one of the most important Zuni artists in history. He worked in the mosaic inlay or overlay style prior to his marriage to Mary Weahkee, the daughter of Teddy Weahkee. He worked from the late 1930s to the 1970s and this piece is estimated to the 1930s to 1940s. In the next to last picture above, from Sei\'s \"Knifewing and Rainbow Man in Zuni Jewelry\" you can see two knifewing figures by David Tsikewa, combined which have almost every characteristic of this piece -- everything is there between the two pieces in regard to the inlay and also  including the elaborate and beautiful wire silver work, except for the eyes. I like it better without the eyes, personally, so I think David Tsikewa felt the same. The really great artists changed their pieces and didn\'t always do exactly the same thing. This one in my view is identifiably his work: check the work on the hat, the inlay design on the wings, the wing shape, the shape and inlay on the body and skirt and the angled legs and the feet. Sei\'s books contain a large amount of errors, but if he\'s right about the David Tsikewa pieces in this book then I think this one is a David Tsikewa piece, too. Of course, you can decide for yourself. In any case, this is one of the great pieces by one of the great Zuni artists. One of Mr. Sei\'s biggest mistakes in my view, that he continues to repeat after having been proven wrong scores of times, is to expect only clones from the great artists; No, they were great because they were creative and experimented. So, I\'ve concluded it\'s a David Tsikewa piece but if it isn\'t it\'s sure a great one by one of the other great Zuni artists. It\'s a fantastic piece indeed.

I always love the spondylus shell, the orange or red spiny oyster shell that you see in the body, hat and legs. The turquoise is beautiful, possibly lavender Bisbee with those speckles, and that is a rare stone. There is mother of pearl and jet, too and all stones were hand cut and buffed and set into mosaic stone to stone inlay set in serrated settings. The piece is framed with spiraled wire and hand made and hand applied hand made raindrops. The piece has a locking pin closure and it\'s just stunning. It would make a great pair with my other pin of his, which also used the same rare turquoise.

This gorgeous pin measures 2\" x 2\" and weighs 14grams. It\'s in great vintage and collectible condition with some minimal normal age related wear. It\'s just wonderful!

Knifewing was a warrior known as the Great One who came down from his ethereal plateau to bestow wisdom, strength and courage amongst his recipients, only revealing himself to the warriors who serve as protectors of the Pueblo.

David Tsikewa was one of the highly renowned Zuni silversmiths who worked for CG Wallace, was collected by C. G. Wallace and were one of the featured artists in the Sotheby\'s C. G. Wallace sale catalog. This is a happy pin which would be great on a hat or on a belt or bag or shirt. It\'s highly collectible, of course. Anything made by this artist is. Simple, elegant and timeless. He was one of the greats and this is a rare and valuable example. A special present!Suitable for the best collections and certainly museum quality.

When I include pages from published books in my listing it is in accordance with Fair Use Law, which permits the use of source material for discussion, education and criticism.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.

I am sorry to say I can no longer recommend ATADA nor buying from their members with perhaps one exception, and retract my previous endorsement of the group.

I request payment by PayPal in three days, but planned in advance of purchase, alternate payment methods and time payments can be arranged.

Everything I sell comes from my personal collection or is something that I would include in my personal collection. Most pieces are museum worthy and gallery suitable, sold to you at great pricing. I vet every item carefully for quality and condition, and offer you the best. I want you to be able to rely on me for top quality, superb items that are often unique and rare examples of old antique vintage southwest, indian, native american and fine gold and gemstones, whether you\'re starting a collection or adding to one, or want something great to wear or gift. My goal is that all my buyers are delighted, that my special pieces find the right homes.
