I am a perfectionist and expect the most of my self above all else. Although I paint still life’s, portraits and landscapes, I have a soft spot for animals. It has been written about my work that itshows a sensitivity and a sense of humor, love and empathy for animals both domestic and wild. These are creatures that allow us to become our inner child and give love without hesitation. Painting is my way of reclaiming my childhood.
I like to say that I studied with masters, although I did not get a formal degree in art. I spenttime after school at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, viewing up close in depth the brush work and methods of many great masters like Sargent, Rembrandt, Whistler. Ialso took weekend open studio classes for life drawing and painting at the Art Students League. In Maryland,I studied at night after work and took classes with Ann D. Schuler at the Schuler School in Baltimore.I was fortunate to also study with Melvin O. Miller and Nancy Conrad in Baltimore.Melvin was a member of the famed \"Six Realists of Baltimore\"in the early 1960\'s. That group included:Joe Sheppard, John Bannon, Frank Redelius, Earl Hoffman,Thomas Rowe, andEvan Keehn, all early students of Jacques Maroger.Jacques Maroger is known for creating the mediums of the masters, both Flemish and Italian. I utilize both types in my work. The Maroger medium is known for glazing and \'old master\' refractive light effects.
My MethodI utilize the best quality oil paints and utilize the best archival standards. I work with a combination of tube paints and hand ground oils (I grind my self). Most of my paintings work with a series of glazes which allows light to be refracted off the surface of the paint in a variety of colorations…which gives it a spark of life!My smaller work is usually painted alla prima, or in one session. The looseness of the paint, reflects the energy and excitement which I see in my subject.
Painting for me is an act of love and proven that it has given back to me so much love in return. Over the years, painting has become as much a necessity as oxygen. It is part of my fiber and in my blood. I work tirelessly at the easel daily. I have been represented in New Mexico, New York and Baltimore and will be furthering my showings in the upcoming year. This is my bread and butter , and is my job and therefore, payment on time, would greatly be appreciated. You are getting an original painting for less than half of what it would cost in a gallery.
