“Schley’s Victory” Orig Manuscript Poem HB Pierce#10148 “Schley’s Victory” - An Original Poem/Manuscript by Harriet B. PierceHarriet B. Pierce is not to be confused with President Franklin Pierce’s sister, Harriet B. Pierce (1800-1837). The poem is transcribed below, and I have shown a newspaper article acknowledging excerpts of her work, from The Boston Post follows after. The original poem is the item up for sale.6.7” x 9.4” autograph manuscript of original poem, December, 1901, 3 pp., on two sheets, the first and second pages are on the front and back of one sheet, “Schley’s Victory,” by Harriet B. Pierce, signed in fountain pen. Transmittal folds with several pinholes and one 1” separation at fold, with a 3” line of soiling spots on the back of the last page, showing through, otherwise very good. #10148 “Schley’s Victory” ’Twas in the spring of ninety-eight.
The war with Spain was on;
Our fleet was off the Cuban coast.
All nations’ eyes upon. The flying squadron left Key West,
Brave Schley was in command;
He went to find Cervera’s fleet,
And capture \"if he can.\" For days and nights the southern coast
Of Cuba he patrolled;
Embarrassed by his coal supply
Positions hard to hold.

From all reports, Schley thought he would
Proceed without delay,
The Spanish fleet was found at last
In Santiago Bay. Straightforth he went and took his stand
Outside the harbor’s buoy;
To wait and watch, to fight and win,
To capture or destroy. ’Twas on the morn of July third.
In Schley’s own words the rest
You know, how forth Cervera sailed
And started for the west. \'Twas then Schley made his famous loop,
Which caused much naval anger;
The Texas was six hundred yards
Away and out of danger. Midst roar and sin of battle heard,
Projectiles falling fast;
Schley kept his men informed
As they raked them fore and aft. Spain\'s last great ship was run aground,
’Twill even be remembered;
A gun was fired, his Flag hauled down,
Cervera had surrendered. Five other Spanish ships went down,
Just off the Cuban coast;
The little Gloucester did the work,
Of Wainwright they all boast. When all was o’er, their duty done.
Loud cheers rang forth from all
Our men - the celebration was
A prelude to our Fourth. And when the war was scarcely o’er,
A controversy ‘case;
“Why not praise Schley?” the people cry,
“Is jealousy the cause?” ‘Twas Hobson sunk the Merrimac
No other claimed the credit;
‘Twas Dewey at Manila Bay.
And he’s received his merit. \'Twas Schley at Santiago fought.
And won the victory;
On that great day he well fulfilled
Traditions of our navy. The people call for Admiral Schley,
An honored name well won;
Who on the bridge of the Brooklyn stood,
And praised men one by one. Front platform, stage and banquet hall,
Schley’s name calls forth applause;
As the rescuer of Greely, And a hero of two wars. Harriet B. Pierce

*Below is an article from : December 22, 1901, Boston Post from Boston, MA · Page 2.
Dec. 21.— Miss Harriet B. Pierce, one of the most popular young ladles in Quincy, a leader in the highest circles of society, highly accomplished and a universal favorite, has been an unusually interested student of the late Spanish war. She is an ardent admirer of Admiral Schley. In an interview yesterday she stated to a Post reporter that her sympathies had been aroused in behalf of Admiral Schley by the persistent and unjust persecution and criticism to which he had been subjected by bitter and jealous enemies during the last two years. She has recently written a poem, which she expresses her admiration for tho hero of Santiago. Extracts from this poem are as follows: SCHLEY’ S VICTORY. ’Twas in the spring of ninety-eight.
