OBJECT: vintage 1930 -1950\'s >OMBRE BEACON BLANKET >custom designed JACKETMAKER: CHRIS O\'CONNELL for SPIDER WOMAN DESIGNS 1988BACKSTORY: Canyon Road in Santa Fe is more than a mile long and from the early 60\'s began to be the location of choice for a colony of artists, designers, boutiques and galleries. With an emphasis on handcrafting and unique Native American artisanal production along with all manner of interpretative collectibles this hilly section of adobes and studio shops catered to those seeking an alter- native to an increasingly overcrowded town center. Chris O\'Connell\'s Spider Woman Designsat #225 Canyon Road was an exemplar of this colony of artisans. From 1988 -2000 her shop of Native American and inspired products: Navajo jewelry, pottery, tourist pieces, furnishings, artifacts and above all TEXTILES became the destination of choice for those seeking a source of curated goods. Particularlynoteworthy and a signature of the workshop were her bespoke creations using vintage BEACON camp BLANKETSca,1930\'s onward. With their \"wool nap\" felted cotton texture, luxurious colorations and Navajo inspired designs they became the template for these artwear pieces. >A custom production beganwith the selection of a blanket followed by measurement, detail discussion and from there an item of tailored clothing would becreated. Both deeply representative and uniquely one of a kind, this visionary art couture translated into highly desired status pieces and from there into areflective shorthand for the iconic Santa Fe experience. photo #12 archival >Thisexceptional JACKET-created in 1988 >single owner >virtually unworn >garment bag stored.
