1 Leaf 18th Century Christian Egyptian Coptic Bible Manuscript & Ornate Initial:
$100.00

First of all, I must mention that this very large Coptic leaf is one of the most impressive and beautiful in my entire collection. It has a beautiful and ornate initial letter that is colored in red and black ink (see the first scanned image). However, the bottom part of the leaf has been torn away (see the bottom of the 3rd and 5th scanned images).

This is a rare Coptic Christian Bible manuscript leaf, but it has smudges and discolorations, as seen in the scanned images. The size is about 8 1/2 in. x 12 1/2 in. and it is dated to the 18th century. This leaf is written on thick paper, with some discoloration and stain, due to its age and liturgical use over the centuries. There are three (3) large initial letters. This leaf contains the following: there are three (3) instances of the important \"Nomina Sacra\" or sacred name, which is an abbreviation of \"The Lord,\" in the form of \"OC,\" with a line above the word; two (2) instances of the Nomina Sacra for \"God,\" one of which has the two letter superimposed on top of each other (see the 5th scanned image, 9th line from the top, 1st on the righty); also, the following identified words: \"The Gospel,\" and \"Prayer,\" as well as \"Alleluia,\" discussed below.

Also, this old Coptic leaf has an important Nomina Sacra, which is an abbreviation of “Hallelujah” or “Alleluia,” and looks like an “X”symbol, but is really the initial “A” superimposed on the final “A”; that is,the \"A\" at the beginning of \"Alleluia\" and the\"A\" at the end (see the 2nd scanned image, bottom line, 1st word or symbol on the righty). The Greekword “Alleluia” occurring in this Coptic Christian text is really a sacred symbolor design. Also, an indication of theabbreviation nature of this symbol is the solid horizontal line above the twosuperimposed letters. The word “Hallelujah”goes back to the Hebrew language and means literally “Praise ye, theLord.” In the New Testament it is foundat Revelation 19:1, 3, 4, and 6.

This is truly an amazing and beautiful leaf. The winner of the sale will not only receive the original Coptic Christian leaf, but also a xerox copy with all these things highlighted and explained by someone who has a Ph.D. degree in Biblical Studies (see the last scanned image). This is an originalmanuscript leaf, not a reproduction. Its authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
