1 Leaf Handwritten Hindu Hymns Sanskrit Manuscript from India with Red Lines:
$20.00

One very rare handwritten manuscript leaf (withtwo sides of written text) from India, written in the Sanskrit language, usingthe unique and distinctive Devanagari script. The text containsHindu hymns, in the form of poems or compositions. Almost every leaf hasan occurrence of the Hindu Rama, who was the 7th Avatar or incarnation ofVishnu, or an occurrence of the Hindu Krishna, who was the 8th Avatar orincarnation of Vishnu. The leaf has a title or subject given (see the 1stscanned image, top word on the left), as well as a sheet or leaf number (seethe 1st scanned image, bottom number on the left). It should beremembered that when we talk about Arabic numbers, we should really say\"Hindu-Arabic\" numeral system, since the Arabs got it from the Hindusof India. I do not know exactly when this manuscript was written, but dueto the age of the paper and the presence of bookworm holes, I would estimatethe early or the middle of the 19th century; this is especially true since theletters use the Classical or Northern, or Kalikata or Calcutta form of the Davanagariscript, which is the older form. It has been examined and verified bya modern Hindi scholar at the University of Utah, who indicated that thismanuscript in Sanskrit in the Devanagari script or alphabet, with moreflourishes than modern printed words. The size of each leaf is about 31/2 in. x 5 in. Each side is ruled with three red vertical lines inthe left and right columns, that provided the point for the scribe to begin andend lines. Also, the single red vertical lines essentially indicate apause like a comma, while the double red vertical lines indicate a full periodof a sentence. Each poem or \"Raga\" is dividedinto two to six Padas, and each Pada is a metrical foot (withSanskrit pada being related to the Latin \"pes\" for foot, and also toEnglish \"foot,\" all from the same Indo-European root). Thewriting is done from the left to the right of each line, just as inEnglish. There are 6 lines on each side. The leaf have somediscoloration, due to age and use. This is an original manuscript leaf, nota modern reproduction. Its authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
