First of all, when someone mentions a textual variant in the New Testament, the response should not be \"I\'ve never heard of that before!\" or \"That\'s not in my King James Version of the Bible!\" Rather it should be: \"What was originally written by Paul in his letter to the Ephesians?\" There is an important textual variants in Ephesians 3:9. In this verse is thestatement about “God, who created all things.”This is supported by the A.D. 200 Papyrus #46, the Greek codexSinaiticus, the Greek Codex Alexandrinus, the Greek Codex Vaticanus, the GreekCodex Ephraimi Rescriptus, the original hand of the Greek Codex Bezae, manyminuscules, the Old Latin, Jerome’sLatin Vulgate (as seen here, with the words \"deo qui omnia creavit\" or \"God who created all things\"), theSyriac Peshitta, the Sahidic Coptic, and the Bohairic Coptic. Some scribe later added the explanatory phrase“by Jesus Christ,” and this demonstrably later text is found in the King JamesVersion..The sale is for a small leaf from a Latin Vulgate Bible written by a medieval scribe on vellum or animal skin in the 13th century, living in Bologna, Italy. This is dated 200 to 250 years before Gutenberg\'s first Bible of 1455. The ink for the Biblical text is a dark brown, while the rubrications for initial letters and chapter numbers alternate between red ink and blue ink. There are also small red marks to indicate the beginning of verses. The colors are strong and fresh-looking, especially on the \"hair\" side, with the \"skin\" side being faded a little.Size of thesheet is 4 1/4 in. x 6 1/4 in. The textblock area is 3 in. x 4 1/4 in. The writing by the scribe is extremely small and precise, with a full twelve lines per inch! The text contains Ephesians 1:9--5:4. You can examine the Latin text and an English translation on the Internet. Notice especially the four (4) large initial capital letters at the beginning of chapters, alternating between red and blue (see the scanned images). Notice that whatever color the letter is, then the decorative fine filigree lines are of the other color. You can see that the four initial letters are actually longer than the body of the text. There are many memorable passages in the text. Weneed to put into context the work of Christian scribes during the last 2,000years.During these centuries scribes developed two kinds of abbreviations inthe manuscripts that were copied and re-copied. The first kind ofabbreviation was the shortening or abbreviation of very common words,so that it was easier and quicker to write such words. These do notconcern us here. The second kind of abbreviation was for the wordsheld sacred by Christians. In the Latin tradition, and especially inJerome\'s Latin Vulgate text, these were called \"Nomina Sacra\" meaning\"Holy Names.\" The common example ofNomina Sacra are Lord, God, Jesus, Christ, Holy Spirit, the Father, andthe Son. This leaf has the NominaSacra or Holy Name for the word \"JAHWEH\" or the \"LORD\" as it is given in the King James Version. Just looking at one chapter, this single leaf from the Ephesians has many instances of Nomina Sacra, but we will only focus on CHRIST: twenty-five (25) instances of CHRIST in the Latin form XRISTUS abbreviated to \"xpi\" (Ephesians 1:10,12, 15, 17, and 20; 2:5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13, and 20; 3:1, 4, 6, 9, 14, 19; 4:7, 12, 13, 15, 20, and 32; 5:2).The winner of the salewill receive the original handwritten leaf, as well as a photocopy of the Latintext, marked by someone who has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (see the last scanned image). This is an absolutely amazing leaf ofa the Latin Bible.
