1 Leaf UYGHUR or YUGUR Buddhist Manuscript with RED and YELLOW & 1 Woodcut Leaf:
$20.00

First of all, there are two(2) separate leaves included in this sale: 1 of a beautiful handwrittenmanuscript in Uyghur or Uighur script and the second leaf is a woodcutprinted sheet in Tibetan Buddhist script.

The first leaf is a late 18thor early 19th century antique Uyghur or Yugur handwritten Buddhist manuscriptleaf from Mongolia, with vertical handwritten text in 19 or 20 columns, whichare read from the top to the bottom, going from the left column first and thenproceeding to the right. The Yugurs or Yellow Uyghurs asthey are traditionally known, are one of China\'s 56 officially recognizednationalities, consisting of 13,719 persons according to the 2000 census. The Yugur live primarily in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Gansu Province. They are Buddhists, About 4,600 of the Yugurs speak the Turkic WesternYugur language and about 2,800 the Mongolic Eastern Yugur language. Theremaining Yugurs of the Autonomous County lost their respective Yugur languageand speak Chinese. A very small number of the Yugur reportedly speakTibetan. They use Chinese for intercommunication. Both Yugur languagesare now unwritten, although vertical Uyghur script (as found here)was in use in some Yugur communities until end of 19th century. The sizeis about 4 in. x 11 1/2 in. The beautiful symbol or character with REDink, in the top left margin indicates the beginning of the Buddhist sutra(see the 1st and 3rd scanned images). Also, notice the wavy YELLOWlines in the center column of the 1st leaf, the significance of which isnot known (see the 2nd scanned image). This leaf is made of hand-madepaper, that shows stain and discoloration, especially along the edges, which isdue to its age and use over the years. The elegant Uyghur script, whichis also known as Old Script or Classical Mongolian, is an alphabeticscriptthat is written vertically from top to bottom with the columnsprogressing from left to right. Each sheet has a border made of redink, and a double-lined red box on the left side for the title of thesutra.

Also included is a woodcutprinted leaf: (2) The next leaf is what is called a woodblock printed sheetwith Tibetan Buddhist script (see the bottom of the 4th scanned image),because a single wooden block is reverse carved, so that when ink is applied tothe wood block and it is used to stamp on paper, it produces a woodblock printfor that particular page. The size is about 3 1/4 in. x 8 1/2 in.

These are originalhandwritten manuscripts and woodblock printed leaves, not modernreproductions. Their authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
