Founded on October 13, 1775 as the Continental Navy, the United States Navy was actually out of service from 1790 until the launch of the first official US Navy warships in 1797. The predecessor to the modern US Coast Guard, the US Revenue Cutter Service, actually filled the naval role during this nearly decade-long absence of an established navy.

On the obverse of the 1 oz Navy Button Domed Silver Round is the image of an open-winged bald eagle with its head looking up to one side. A horizontal set anchor in the lower half of the design is clutched tightly by the eagle’s talons, and three cannonballs are featured below that anchor. Finishing off the design are 13 stars around the eagle and a border of roping.

The reverse of all Navy Button Domed Silver Rounds features the Great Seal of the United States. Used on various government documents and military insignia, the Great Seal includes the American bald eagle clutching the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other.
