Chalkware and glassware were the prizes that were given at US County Fairs and Carnivals before stuffed animals. They were popular from WW1 through the late 50\'s and early 60\'s. Generally older pieces were solid, newer were hollow (and often made into banks). They were usually painted crudely and garishly with brush or air gun. The soft plaster broke easily and the bare unprotected paint rubbed off. Now they are avidly collected. This little fellow is made from solid chalkware. I\'m not sure if he is a Boston Terrier, French Bulldog or Pug. He is painted rusty red/brown, cream and black with a silver collar by air gun. He looks very stately and dignified. These were made between the late 30\'s and early 40\'s. He is in good condition for his age with a few areas of paint loss and fading and a bit of embedded dust in the creases that I am afraid to try to remove. He stands 10\" tall, by 4-1/2\" wide and 8\" from nose to tail. He comes from a smoke free, pet-loving home.
