Excellent condition! This is a Sampson Mordan solid 9K yellow gold pencil. It is approx. 2.90 inches long with the pencil in and 5.80 inches with it out by 0.50 inches wide. You push the bottom of it and hold it upside down to release and reset the pencil. It is engraved Sept 1918-July 1921 M.B.T. From T.G.H. and hallmarked S. Mordan & Co. It is 25.4 grams. In 1822, Mordan and his co-inventor John Isaac Hawkins filed the first patent in Great Britain for a metal pencil with an internal mechanism for propelling the graphite "lead" shaft forward during use, as an improvement on the less complex leadholders that merely clutched the pencil lead to hold it into a single position.
