From1892-1963, the Keystone View Co. was headquartered in Meadsville, PA.It produced thousands of stereographic view cards and often used theminterchangeably in various sets such as ‘Tour of the World.’ In1963 the business was sold to Mast Development Corp. of Davenport,IA. Fifteen years later the records and negatives went to the Museumof Photography at the University of California at Riverside.

Thisis apparently a complete set – with no duplications. While many ofthe photographs were probably taken between 1910 and 1930, some couldbe as late as the 1950s and others have a ‘V’ preceding theidentification number. These latter would have been purchased fromUnderwood by Keystone and may have been taken earlier. The SouthAmerican photos cover the entire continent: Argentina, Bolivia,Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the Guianas (British, Dutch, andFrench), Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Eachcard is 3.25 x 7 inches and the double image becomes a stereo viewwhen viewed through a stereoscope. Keystone cards are all curved andare all gray in color with black and white pictures. Some of thecards in this set contain printed information about the subject onthe backside. Note that each of these cards, previously owned by alibrary, has a handwritten ‘South America’ on the back. Many ofthe cards have worn and, sometimes, spongy edges. They were obviouslyused – but this doesn’t affect the pictures. All pictures are ingood, very good, or excellent condition. The photos shown here arerepresentative of the overall quality and diversity. The two boxesare probably Keystone boxes but they are taped and could not beconsidered in good condition.
