THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

GREEK NEW TESTAMENT MANUSCRIPT

FRAGMENT ON VELLUM

1080 - 1150 A. D.

Gospel of Luke in Greek; Manuscript Fragment on Vellum. [Late 11th century to early 12th century]. Byzantine text type underlying the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible.Description: Written in neatly formed letters with ligatures and curvatures of the usual type exhibited in minuscule specimens of the period.Date: The manuscript has been dated on the basis of palaeographical considerations (GA 535, GA 537GA 538, GA2445; GA is the numbering system that Nestle-Aland, Novum Testamentum Graece 28th ed. use in referring to the vast majority of NT minuscule manuscripts: minuscules 535 and 538 manuscripts at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor USA; minuscule 2445 is in the Munich Bible Center].

Provenance: Presumably entered Europe following the Fall of Constantinople in the late 1400s. It was held at the Château de Chacenay until the 1980s. The Château de Chacenay is situated in the Aube département of France. Recorded since 1075, it was the fief of numerous important families over the years. Construction of the castle began in the 13th century. Sited at the heart of a forest, in the Middle Ages it formed an impregnable fortress thanks to its ramparts, keep (now destroyed), ditches, drawbridge and towers. It was the meeting grounds for one of many of the crusades that happened throughout Europe. Destroyed by fire during the French Revolution, the castlewas rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The reconstruction of the Chateau was initiated by the brothers Edmond and Arthur Bertherand who were passionate about the Middle Ages. The manuscript would likely have entered the Chateau in the mid-19th century.Significance: Early manuscript evidence for the New Testament remains among the most sought after material in the world. The word Bible comes from the Greek biblia (books); manuscript comes from Latin manu (hand) and scriptum (written). Of all ancient literature, the Bible is the most well documented text to survive from antiquity. The New Testament alone is supported by over 5,000 complete or fragmented Greek manuscripts, far more than any other ancient work. Most are held in museums and other public institutions, with only a few still remaining in private hands. Public interest in ancient biblical texts dramatically increased with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls between the years of 1947 and 1956. These mostly fragmented texts, numbered according to the caves in which they were found, have been called “the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times.”Dead Sea Scrolls fragments (some no larger than a dime and containing only a few words of text) have sold for more than $100,000 USD. In contrast, this remarkable fragment of the Gospel of Luke offers an affordable option for collectors desiring to obtain an early manuscript witness to the world’s most valuable book - the Bible.
