12 Lenox \"Old Marks\" Cup Liners

Each sterling silver cup holderand seven of the saucers appear to bemarked with a winged unicorn Pegasus, which is the mark of the Mauser Manufacturing Company, founded in North Attlenboro, MA in 1887, and later transferred to New York in 1890. The company later merged with Hayes & McFarland Company and Roger Williams Silverware Company to form the Mt. Vernon Company Silversmiths Inc., which was purchased by Gorham Corporation in 1931. All of the saucers and each cup holder also say STERLING. Each cup holder also has the number 5740A stamped on the inside surface of the handles.

Each Lenox china cup liner bears the \"old\" Lenox green wreath surrounding a script capital L, and the word LENOX below the wreath. Because the words MADE IN THE USA do NOT appear on any of these cups, it is reasonable to assume that all were produced between 1906 and 1930. Ten of the cups have a wider flair, two have a slightly narrower flair, with one having a flatter underside to the base (compare top left and right cup liners to the other liners in next to final photo). Although I have owned these cups for more than 10 years, I did not notice these variations until I was preparing these items for sale, and I mention them to be complete in this description.

There areno chips, no cracks, no bends or dings, no engravings or monograms. There are very light maker\'s marks (letters and numbers) faintly scratched below the STERLING mark on some of the saucers, which is a fairly typical practice among sterling silver manufacturers. There are light surface scratches that are consistent with the age and use of these items. My best guess--and it is only a guess--is that the liners were made between 1906 and 1930. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable about the Mauser marks to give any range of dates.
