Description:

An interesting antique 12th Century Kashan blueglazed potterybowl with tall straight sides and a well defined footed base. The interior of the bowl is incised around the rim with a calligraphic band of symbols, and glazed radial blue stripes under a matt transparent glaze.

The inner rim is is incised with acalligraphic band of symbols. Themain body of the vessel is glazed in a soft matt cream with blue underglaze radial stripes and regular double blue stripes to the exterior of the bowl. The remaining glaze also shows an historic lustrous iridescence. The foot of the vessel is unglazed.

Kāshān ware is a style of lustreware pottery associated withKāshān, Persia (Iran), in production from about the beginning of the 11th Centuryuntil the mid 14th Century. It was derived from motifs in earlier textiles andis especially noted for the density and delicate execution of its decorativepatterns.In modernPersian,the word for a tile (kashi) comes from the name of the town.
