NEAR ORANGE COURTHOUSE, VIRGINIA

This marvelous Confederate Civil War letter was written byPrivate Willie G Landof 1st Co. H, 12th North Carolina Infantry -Garland\'s, Iverson\'s, Johnston\'s Brigade,D.H. Hill, Rodes\' Division.Penned just after the Mine Run Campaign and prior to the spring battles at Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse.


The 12thNorth Carolina Infantrywas mustered into Confederate service on May 18, 1861. The unit participated in every engagement as part of the Army of Northern Virginia and was present at Appomattox Courthouse.

TRANSCRIPTION


Campnear Orange Courthouse, Va.
January 7, 1864

Dear Father,I take the time this evening of writing you a few lines. I have a chance to send it safely to let you know that I am well hoping this finds you all the same.I received the letter that you intended for Tom but I sent it to him immediately and he received the letter you intended for me and he sent it to me immediately.I have not seen John for some time but he is near me with his company. He is well. I hear from himnearly every day.I have nothing new to write at present. It is very cold and I think it will snow tonight. You may look for me at home shortly. I think I will get a furlough shortly. I would liketo get the chance to come now for I would like to see you all very much.I have nothing more at present. Write soon. I remain your affectionate son until death.W.G. Land
