Field collected by us from a village near Pleebo. We are one of a very few dealers who buy tribally used pieces directly from the Grebo villagers, and not copies made to be sold,

This stunning Double Faced Animal Grebo mask was collected from the village \'Bodio\' (spiritual Chief) and given an approximate age of over 100 years.

\"Grebo\" means \"leaping monkey people,\" a reference to their flight from a former homeland near the Sahara.Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo, a little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of Eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D\'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. They are ruled by a chief known as bodio who lives in near total isolation and also assumed the function of grand priest.

The Grebo sculpt several types of masks. The masks appeared during rituals reserved for initiates and at the time of festive occasions, when the whole population was able to see them. The war masks designed primarily to terrify, appeared during battles, in the dances beforehand, and at the funerals of warriors.Figures are rare. Their style is closely related to Dan, We and other neighboring tribes. zyama

THE AFRICANTRIBALCOLLECTION

Excellent quality Tribal Art at sensible prices

We are a husband and wife team based in the UK with strong personal links to Ghana and much of West Africa. Over the past few decades we have been passionate collectors of African antiqueswith particular interest in tribally used ceremonial masks and figures. Wehave both previously lived in West Africa formore than15 years and have an extensive personal collection from our travels around Africa.

My husband Steve is also the \"tribal expert\" and appraiser for the European based \'Fine Tribal Gallery\'.Headvises new and established collectors, other dealers and museums on tribal art and also conducts exhibitions and seminars.

African tribal art has been verysought afterover the past decades and it is commonly known thattribal art has been plundered during this timeand many \'copies\' have entered the market. However, with the right knowledge and expertise it isstill possible to findnice authentic tribal art piecesin Africa.

We arein Africa several times a year looking after our aid projects, but also searching for tribal treasures from \'untapped\'sources. This is what we love, and our travels involve going deep into bush to theremote villages. Our passion is for rare tribally used artefacts with excellent \'style\'and \'patina\' which move us. The sources forourtribal pieces stretch across Africafrom Sierra Leone,Cote D\'Ivoire, Mali,Nigeria etcand down as far as the Congo.

We have awarehouse andan outlet situated on the beachfront in Accra in Ghana where everything is shipped to us from. We initially store the treasures from our African hunting trip here, andall pieces are vetted by Nationaal Museum curators and fumigated prior to shipment. Upon arrival in the UK, the pieces are re-checked for mould and any evidence of insects before we enter them into our collection.

We have local experts in West Africa and we utilise their knowledge of the woods used and the carving styles of the relevant tribes to help assess the age and authenticity of the pieces.

To keep up to date with the tribal art market weregularly attendsales worldwide such as Sotheby\'s, Christie\'s andBonham\'s and we have hadmany of our pieces appraised by other well known collectors, like the eminent\'Jean Baptiste Bacquart\' in Paris.

The African TribalCollection although part of \'Fair Trade Ghana\' is not a registered charity in the UK, but we are nonetheless passionate about Africa andtribal art andweare doingwhat we canto support various villages inGhana,Cote D\'Ivoire, Maliandelsewhere in West Africa.Michaela alsouses \'FairTradeGhana\' to help support local artisans and villages.

We also work with and support 2 other amazing charities \'WaterAid\' \'SOS Childrens villages\' helping toprovide \'clean water\' solutions to many villages and supporting orphan children refugees and those whose parents have died from Aids.

Please Google \'finetribalgallery\' for more info on our projects.

Please note that we tend not to take pictures in a studio Environment. We try to take the pictures in Africa where we find the items. Prior to shipment from Africa we fumigate the pieces but we do not polish or clean them with chemicals, meaning that buyers receive the pieces as they were found. This, we believe,is part of the authentic African experience we try to offer.

We always welcome questions, please email us via or michaelaberko@hotmail.com

We send pieces securely packed andby recorded delivery + insurance

We reserve the right to relist items not paid for within 7 days
