This is an unusual steatite scarab, dating from 1500 B.C. The scarab came from an old collection, described as Dilmun. This refers to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the coastal regions of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. From the Telmun, (Sumerian: 𒉌𒌇𒆠, ni.tukki = DILMUNki; Arabic: دلمون) was an ancient Semitic-speaking polity in Mesopotamia. The scarab with decorated with scorpions, presumably for protection against scorpion stings and insect bites.
