Tvtte le lettioni di Giovam Battista Gelli : fatte da lui nella Accademia fiorentina.

Gelli, Giambattista. In Firenze [Venice] : NP [Lorenzo Torrentino?], 1551.

Rare post incunable commentary on Dante Alighieri\'s Divina Commedia, including all three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradisio, by the great Italian scholar Giovanni Battista Gelli (Firenze 1498-1563), who taught at the Florentine Academy 1541-1551. His studies of Petrarch and Dante are, in addition to those of Vasari, the most important sources of artistic creation in the sixteenth century in Italy. This book contains 12 \'letters\' from Gelli, with a majority examining Dante, as well as a few on Petrarch, and a couple other subjects.

Later 3/4 fine leather binding with gilt rule, date and title to the spine, the boards with marbled paper coverings, as shown. Spine cover beginning to separate, mostly along the rear edge, but well kept otherwise with light rubbing, the gilt still bright. The boards are also stressed at the hinges/joints, but remain whole. Ribbon marker still intact. Title with attractive vignette, also some devices and initials illustrated throughout. Text in Italian with some Latin. Complete; [16], 162, [15, 31]pp. Unmarked lest for a pair of bookplate in front on the pastedown; leaves slightly toned with a few small flaws, title with a few stains, but overall in very nice shape. Newer EPs, probably from the 1700s. A rare piece with a high interest and literary (and monetary, for that matter) value. Measures 6.5\" x 4\" x 1.5\". Good luck!

Giambattista Gelli From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dialoghi

Giambattista Gelli (1498–1563) was a Florentine man of letters, from an artisan background. He is known for his works of the 1540s, Capricci del bottaio and La Circe, which are ethical and philosophical dialogues. Other works were the plays La sporta (1543) and L\'errore (1556).

In his historical writings, Gelli was influenced by the late 15th-century forgeries of Annio da Viterbo, which purported to provide evidence from ancient texts to show that Tuscany had been founded by Noah and his descendants after the Deluge.
