We are pleased to offer this original miniature map of Scandinavia andthe far north from a \"bootleg\" edition of the Epitome TheatriOrteliania ofAbraham Ortelius (1527-1598), creator of the first true atlas in themodern sense known as the TheatrumOrbis Terrarum. The magnificent maps of the Theatrum madeit one of the most expensive publications of the 16th century, so toreach a wider audience Ortelius authorised the Flemish engraver andpublisherPhilip Galle (1537-1612) to issue a pocket edition of the atlas knownas the Epitome.The success of this publication promted a number of Italian imitatorsto commission the engraving of plates in Italy that were close copiesof the Ortelius/Galle maps issued under the title Theatro del Mondo.Thisexample is from the most prominent Italian edition of the atlas thatwasoriginally published in 1598 by Pietro Maria Marchetti (fl. 1565-1609).Orteliusbased thecartography for his original folio map on earlier maps by Mercator, thefamous 1539 Olaus Magnus map as well as the fanciful accounts of Nicoloand Antonio Zeno.Despitethe constraints of the miniature format, design elements from theoriginal folio map are incorporated here including the handsome shipand compass-themed mileage scale at lower left. The mythicalisland of Friesland is shown and a large arctic continent is noted asthe residence of pygmies!

Condition- Please note carefully:The map is in overall fair conditionas canbeascertained from photos, image area exhibiting a small dark area atlower left corner, another at upper right and a small stain to left mapborder and in upper left corner, otherwise good with hand colourbright and vivid. Map exhibits some minorshow-through onrecto of text on verso as is usual. Outside of map image areatext exhibits a large stain in upper margin just beyond neatline withsignificant ink stains on verso - these stains are the aforementioned\"dark areas\" as they appear via show-through on recto with image areaon recto in fact entirely clean, some minor chips and fraying tomargin edges.
