16 April 1864 Bridgeport, Alabama Soldier's Letter For Sale
To: Wife Bridgeport, Alabama
From: F, M. G. Melton April 16, 1864
Co. B, l30th Indiana Vol. Inf. Camp near Henderson, Ala.
Dear Wife,
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I embrace the present opportunity of
informing you that I am well at present and I hope when these few lines come before you they may find you enjoying the same state of health. We left Nashville on the 5th of April and took three days ration[s] for Murfreesborough where we got more supplies and we took on four days rations for Tallahoma where we took on rations for two days to go to the Cumberland Mountain which we crossed in two days but we took on fours days
rations to last us to Bridgeport which we will reach tomorrow but our rations is a getting
scarce but we have but nine miles more to make and then we will draw rations to last us to Chattanooga, Tenn. and from there I expect we will go to Fort Louden.
I am standing the march finely with the exception of a few days. We only march
about eleven miles a day. From Nashville to Murfreesborough, 32 miles from
Murfreesborough to Tallahoma, 44 miles from Tallahoma to the Cumberland Mountain, 18 miles and from Cumberland Mountain to Bridgeport is about 40 miles, I guess. Crossing the Cumberland Mountain was the hardest job I ever done in my life. It took about two days to cross the Mountain, I guess.
I will write no more at present but remain your affectionately until death.
