AE-J (1566-1625), which is possibly a pseudonym for Jean L\'Heureux, was a Jesuit. This apology relates to Garnet, also a Jesuit, who, though not directly involved in the Gun Powder Plot, learned of it through the confessional and gave the government no warning. This was in accord with his c. 1598 work, A Treatise of Equivocation which most interpreted as a defense of outright lying. Henry Garnet was provincial head of the Jesuit order in England; he was executed for treason in May 1606.
