Offered here is a1656 Commonwealth silver shilling in VF. Has a chip out of the planchet that is fairly common on these.The best struck areas are near EF and a full bold date. It is a very nice coin that looks great.Although dated 1652 Massachusetts silver shillings were not made until at least 1665. TheColonists could not get the King to issue silver coins so during the English Civil War when King Charles had been executed and England was a commonwealth they used the date 1652 to avoid the displeasure of the new King Charles II. So coins such as this were the forerunner of Mass. silver. Could have been used by a Patriot in earlyColonial America. A great coin for a Colonial type set, and priced right also.See the scans.
