Isaac-Joseph Berruyer (1681 – 1758) was aFrench Jesuit historian. His great work is AHistory of the People of God. This famous first part, of a three part work,contains Old Testament commentary and prophecies. Because of its controversialcontent, this book was condemned by many French bishops and priests and waslater put onto the Prohibited Book Index.

When Berruyer began writing this novel, hestrangely intended to rewrite the Bible in French. However, this work took onmuch more of a novel form which earned him a great reputation, but also a placeon a list of banned books. There are large traces of blasphemy as well asheresy throughout, most of which is disguised as protesting clergy and otherlaymen. The Jesuits openly and strongly opposed this book, even though Berruyerhimself was a Jesuit.

While we do not find other examples of thissame edition for sale elsewhere; we find 1739 printings for sale for $1,350!
